Christmas Copout Post!

Yeah, I can't really think of anything to write about today, so I'll just pass on a link and go.

EEStor Issued a Patent For Its Supercapacitor

This is huge news for electric cars. The capacitor they're describing stores about as much energy as the battery for the Tesla Roadster, but weighs a fraction as much and can be charged in a few minutes. If they can actually mass-produce these things, then we're in for some interesting times.

(Personally, though, I'm more interested in whether or not they can scale it down too - laptop batteries, for instance, could benefit tremendously from something like this.)

Well, I'm pretty excited about the application for cars since the performance of the current electric cars could be increased significantly if the capacitor works like they're saying. Of course, it looks like something that could be incredibly expensive and not worthwhile in most products. Switching away from chemical storage of electricity has the benefit of not having to replace the batteries when they get old and useless, though, so maybe it is worthwhile in smaller things over longer durations, but the quality of production on smaller electronics I've had shows that I'd just rather replace the whole thing when the battery gets old.

Also, the ignorance of patent law of the people posting on that article makes me shudder.
